How to Engage Gen Z and Millennials: A Guide to Youth Marketing in Nigeria and Beyond.

Alright, let’s get real for a minute on this episode with all sentiments aside.

Nigeria is a country with one of the largest youth populations in the world and if you want to survive and thrive extremely well in the business scene, you need to engage the Nigerian Gen Z marketing.

This isn’t just smart, it is essential and necessary that you do and have them by your side.

I’m talking about “Gen Z” and a vast majority of “Millennials”, fondly known as the set of people who are glued to their phones, obsessed with social media trends, and will call you out without hesitation if they deem your brand offensive.

(they probably wouldn’t agree to this, but the writer is part of them, so this is an insider cue)

So imagine how well they can spot bad marketing campaign from miles away.

But as anyone who has tried to appeal to younger generations, You need a youth digital marketing strategy that resonates with their values, speaks their language (literally and figuratively), and connects with their digital habits.

You might literally have to learn and get accustomed to their terminologies.

“steeze” “vibe” “bfr” “not giving” the list in-fact goes on and on.

So how can your brand properly tap into the youth market effectively?

Once again, this is an insiders cue, so stay glued. (A Gen z would say “WORDD” to that)

Know your audience :

First things first. who are these people?

Nigerian Gen Z (born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s) and Millennials (born between the early 1980s and mid-1990s)

They are socially conscious, and more connected to global trends than any generation before them.

They care about causes like #EndSARS, climate change, and gender equality. Brands that stand for something and show genuine commitment to social causes will earn their respect and importantly their Naira.

They live online.

These young folks are proudly Nigerians, love their culture, love their Afro beats and want to see brands that get them and reflect that.

Campaigns should therefore be crafted in ways that’ll acknowledge their culture and identity.

Throw in a Wizkid or Davido track and watch the magic happen.

At Bloom, we understand the power of connecting with Gen Z and Millennials.

Whether you're targeting Nigerian youth or global markets,

Technology:

This generation grew up with smartphones and tech at their ease. Brands that resonates and offer innovations to make life easier would have a grasp of their attention.

(They would say “soft life”)

The power of diverse media platforms:

Social media is the heartbeat of communication for Nigerian youth. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, and Snapchat are where they hang out, share ideas, and engage with brands.

If your brand isn’t present and active on these platforms, they probably don’t even know you. (No offense).

Talk to them, don’t just sell to them.

Respond to comments, create polls, ask questions.

Don’t forget to create content that is funny, relatable and easy to share.

With emphasis on it being short.

If it must be long, make it catchy and engaging. Last time majority of them read lengthy notes was when they wanted a degree.

And if you get all this right, You’ve got yourself a loyal squad.

Who knows, your brand might get a fan club.
